Graphite moulds are used in manufacture of diamond tools used in stone cutting industry. Isotropic Graphite for Pressure Sintering.
The term pressure sintering is used for various processes in the manufacture of hard metals, ceramic and diamond tools. In these processes graphite has a key position and is available with a combination of properties specially designed for use in a variety of conditions . graphite can be offered having specially high mechanical strength, electrical resistance, isotropic properties or resistance to oxidation.

This process makes great demands on the graphite materials used and on their finish. It is necessary to deal with high pressure at high temperatures and often in oxidising atmospheres if pressing tools are to be right for the duty and give a long life than high grade graphite and precision machining are essential. Special ringsdroff graphites and suitable machining techniques have been developed in close co-operation with manufacturer or plants and users. We supply precision made parts individually or with large series production runs. If desired we help with the design of moulds.
All our graphites for pressure sintering are isostatically pressed. It is therefore unnecessary to check on pressing direction or graphite grain. When designing moulds it is essential to bear in mind the electrical and thermal values of any graphites used.
The economics of the pressure sintering process and the quality of the product are directly influenced by the graphite chosen. Heating up speed and temperature level must be seen as a function of compatibility of the combination of parts. Suitable combinations must be selected with care. High oxidation wear rate often results from an unfavourable choice of materials. In general we recommended working in an inherit atmosphere where temperatures exceed 500°C although this can give rise to handling problems and lengthy production cycles.
Heating Methods and Suggestions for using Graphite:
Basic Design of Graphite Moulds for Pressure Sintering:
The article to be sintered is simultaneously heated and subjected to pressure (F) in a graphite Mould. Heating can be arranged by direct passage of current or by induction.
The Filing Space (5) is formed between the mould (4) and the plungers (3) and can be varied in form and volume.
The water cooled brass contacts(1) reduce heat transference to other equipment. The graphite contacts(2) act as conductors for electric current and at the same time exert pressure on the plungers (3).
a) Through the plungers
The plungers are in the electric circuit. The temperature over 1000°C it is desirable to heat through the mould to achieve an even flow of current and heat. This avoids difficulties with conduction through plunger and mould, which can sometimes have a negative one-sided current flow, especially if a non-conductive component is being sintered.
b) Through the mould
In this case the mould is in the electric circuit and heat builds up in this and is conducted to the component being sintered.
